A Guide to Help You Know What to Do and What Not to Do
Failure to Follow Court Rules May Result in You Being Removed From the Building and/or Facing Criminal Charges. This Guide Was Compiled and Provided by The Special Court Judges Association of Pennsylvania’s Public Relations Committee but you should consult your local court as rules may differ from county-to-county or court-to-court.
DO:
Arrive Early and Bring Extra Copies of Evidence You Plan to Present
You could be found guilty or a judgment may be entered against you if you are absent, late, or not prepared.
Dress Appropriately and Wear Shoes
Clothing needs to completely cover all intimate parts of the body, dresses must be long enough to fully cover undergarments when seated, and all shirts must have sleeves (tank tops are not appropriate).
Remove Sunglasses and Hats (Other Than Religious Headwear) in the Building
Stand When the Judge Enters the Courtroom
(This is to show respect for the law and the authority of the court.)
Silence or Turn Off Cell Phones
Be Respectful to Everyone in the Courtroom
(Only speak when instructed to do so by the Judge.)
Get a Babysitter
(Unless they are required to attend, it is recommended that children not attend court proceedings.)

DO NOT:

Bring Food or Beverages into The Courtroom
Record the Proceedings Unless Given Permission to Do So By the Judge (201 Pa Code Rule 1910)
Display Pictures or Slogans on Clothing, Banners, or Signs that May Be Obscene, Distracting, Disruptive, or Intended to Influence the Judge
Disrupt the Court Proceedings
(Arguing, talking out of turn, laughing, making noises, or shaking your head in court is disruptive.)
Bring Illegal Substances or Weapons into the Building
Use Alcohol, Marijuana, or Substances that Will Affect Your Ability to Participate in Court
(Some substances have highly distinctive odors and it is very easy to detect when someone is under the influence.)
